Buying a prom dress online gives you far more choice than most high-street shops, and you can compare styles at your own pace. It also means you can’t try the dress on first, so a little checking beforehand saves a lot of stress. Here’s what to check before you pay.

1. Check the shop is real
Fake dress sites usually copy photos from real retailers, offer designer-style gowns at suspiciously low prices and disappear after taking payment. Look for:
- A secure site (a padlock and https in the address bar).
- A real contact page with an email address and a way to reach a person.
- Clear policies on delivery, returns and cancellations.
- Reviews on independent sites, not only on the shop’s own pages.
- Spelling and photos that look consistent, rather than a mix of copied images.

2. Read the reviews properly
Look at reviews on both the retailer’s own site and independent sites such as Trustpilot or Google. The most useful ones mention fit, fabric, colour accuracy, delivery time and how the company handled any problems, and the best ones include customer photos. Don’t rely on the star rating alone.
3. Understand the returns policy before you buy
Policies differ a lot, so read them before ordering. Check:
- Whether the dress is made to order, and whether made-to-order items can be returned.
- The return window, who pays for postage and what condition the dress must be in.
- What happens if the shop makes a mistake (wrong size, colour or style, or a fault).
- Whether you can change your order before production starts.
Made-to-measure dresses are different. In the UK, goods made to your specification are usually excluded from the standard 14-day right to cancel an online order, so a change of mind often isn’t covered. 4. Get your sizing right
Dress sizes vary between brands, and many formal dresses follow different sizing charts, so don’t rely on your usual size. For a made-to-measure dress, measurements matter even more:
- Measure your bust, waist and hips, plus any extra measurements the shop asks for, such as height or hollow-to-hem.
- Wear thin or close-fitting clothes and ask someone to help you.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight.
- Check the measurements again when your order confirmation arrives.

5. Judge the quality from the listing
Photos are edited and shot in good light, so read the description for fabric, lining, built-in support, closure type (zip or lace-up) and any care instructions. Lighter fabrics such as chiffon and tulle are comfortable for dancing, while satin and structured fabrics hold their shape.
6. Check the timing
Every HappyProm dress is made to order. In busy season, allow around seven weeks for making and delivery (25–30 working days to make, plus 3–5 working days shipping), and ideally two extra weeks spare, so about nine weeks before your prom. Outside busy season, around four to five weeks plus spare time. Need it sooner? Rush making is free, but please contact us first.

7. Pay safely
- Avoid shops that only accept bank transfers or gift cards.
- Paying by credit card or PayPal usually gives you extra protection if something goes wrong. For card purchases over £100, ask your card provider about Section 75 protection.
- Keep your order confirmation, receipts and photos of the dress when it arrives.
